about
This song was inspired by the famous "who breaks a butterfly on a wheel" story about the Rolling Stones' arrest in 1966, and about some recent events as well.
lyrics
Mama, I wanna fly. I say Mama, I wanna try.
But the bastards spit in my eye. Looks like they don’t want me to fly
She said “Why? Why, why, why do you wanna die, my butterfly?”
I told my teacher “I must be free”. I said “hey teacher just wait and see”
And so the teacher he looked at me, he just shook his head impatiently
And he said “son you’re never ever gonna go far, you’re a shooting star.”
Mama, still wanna fly. I say Mama, still wanna try.
But all the doctors have analysed, and the castrators, have testified,
They said “Why? Why, why, why do you wanna die, little butterfly.”
Went to the preacher said “I wanna fly. Cause I know up there it’s only sky
And I know I have got to try. Cause’ I don’t want life to pass me by.”
He said “son, you ain’t ever gonna fly, you’re just gonna die.”
Mama, I cannot fly. I say Mama, can’t even try.
Oh tell me mama – and don’t deny – why I must be crucified
She said “Why? Why, why, why did you wanna try?
